Carpentry and joinery

Ben

12 years in the building trade, with an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry.

Ben is the carpenter. That covers the joinery on a job, first fix and second fix, and the timber work behind things that are not obviously carpentry: the frame of a dormer, the structure under a floor, a set of gates hung so they still shut in the wet.

The NVQ Level 3 is a trade qualification rather than a membership of anything, so there is no badge that comes with it. It is the reason the carpentry on this site looks the way it does.

Roofing and leadwork

Adam

10 years in the building trade, all of them on roofs.

Adam is the roofer. Pitched and flat, Cotswold stone slate, and the leadwork that goes with them: valleys, flashings and the joints where a roof meets a wall or a chimney, which is where most roofs let water in.

Stone slate is its own job. The slates are graded and laid in diminishing courses, largest at the eaves down to smallest at the ridge, and a roof relaid without that grading reads wrong from the road even to somebody who could not say why.

Working together

It is the two of them and nobody else. The person who comes out to price the work is the person who turns up to do it.

On most jobs they work together, which is why the recommendations tend to name both of them. Between them that covers most of what a house needs doing to it, from a stone slate roof and a set of dormers down to a door that has never shut properly.

They take on one job at a time and finish it before starting the next, which is why they will sometimes say they cannot start for a few weeks. It is also why the garden goes back the way you would want it before they leave.
